Ostertagiasis (Ostertagia ostertagi)
Introduction
Ostertagiasis is a gastrointestinal nematode infection of cattle affecting the abomasum. It causes significant production losses due to impaired digestion and protein loss.
Etiology
Pathogenesis
- Larvae invade gastric glands of abomasum
- Cause destruction of acid-producing cells
- Leads to increased gastric pH and poor digestion
Clinical Signs
- Profuse diarrhea
- Weight loss
- “Bottle jaw” edema
Diagnosis
- Fecal egg counts
- History of pasture exposure
Treatment
- Macrocyclic lactones
- Benzimidazoles
Control
- Pasture management
- Strategic deworming programs
