Hydatidosis (Echinococcus granulosus)



Introduction

Hydatidosis is a zoonotic parasitic disease caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus. It forms hydatid cysts in internal organs of intermediate hosts.

Epidemiology
  • Definitive host: dogs
  • Intermediate hosts: sheep, cattle, humans
Pathogenesis
  • Larvae form hydatid cysts in liver and lungs
Clinical Signs
  • Often asymptomatic in livestock
  • Organ dysfunction in heavy infections
Diagnosis
  • Postmortem cyst detection
  • Imaging in humans
Control
  • Dog deworming
  • Proper disposal of offal
